illuminate:nextgen Challenge
The illuminate:nextgen Challenge is a week long challenge which involves students exploring key concepts and ideas around starting their own business to solve a current problem in their community. The ideas are developed using contemporary business planning tools, with students presenting business plans, financial forecasts, pitch decks, marketing collateral and more to prove the viability of their business.
Each challenge is facilitated by illuminate Education’s experts as well as business and community leaders who will share their experience and knowledge through presentations, assessment and feedback.

Consultation Survey for EBE NSW Members for the NSW Curriculum Review Interim Report
Between September and November 2018, a community engagement process occurred with regards to the NSW Curriculum Review. EBE NSW made a submission to the Review at this stage and it can be read here:

The NSW Curriculum Review represents a once in a generation opportunity to review what is being taught in our schools and how we can best ensure our education system is preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
Economics and Business Educators NSW (EBE NSW) wants to hear your views about the place of Commerce, Economics, Legal Studies and Business Studies for a 21st century curriculum. As the peak teachers’ association for these subjects we want to represent your views and opinions in the next iteration of the curriculum review.

The new NESA Years 7 – 10 Commerce Elective Syllabus (2019) is now available on the NESA website.
Schools will continue to deliver the current syllabus (2003) in 2019.Schools will implement the new syllabus from Term 1, 2020. Additional advice about implementation is available on the NESA website.

2020 Business Educators Australasia Biennial Conference – Call for Papers
EBE NSW is an affiliate member of the national subject association, Business Educators Australasia (BEA).
The 2020 Business Educators Australasia Biennial Conference will be held in Adelaide on 1 and 2 October 2020. The Business and Enterprise Teachers’ Association of South Australia and the Economics Teachers Society of South Australia, in conjunction with BEA, are hosting the conference. The broad theme for the conference is “Food and Futures”. Conference participants will be provided with relevant examples and learning applications in this theme area. The conference will be attended by teachers from across Australia.
Conference strands:
- Accounting, Business, Economics, Legal/Civics and Citizenship: Presentations addressing as many common themes for each of the four strands across all Australian state curriculums will be considered.
- Year Levels 7 to 10: Presentations relating to Economics and Business including Financial Literacy from the National Curriculum (ACARA).
- Of interest to all: Cross curriculum in nature and applicable to all business educators – for example, providing effective feedback to students and embedding the use of digital learning technologies. Pedagogical strategies and sessions on 21st century learning and work skills are also invited.
Educators are invited to present at the conference. Preference will be given to presentations within the strands that have a focus on one or more of the following:
- curriculum developmentt
- using digital technologies with students
- applying high impact teaching strategies to enhance learning and teaching
- supporting students from culturally diverse backgrounds
- supporting students with English as an additional language
- assessment for learning
- differentiated teaching.

Work Experience at the Reserve Bank of Australia
The Reserve Bank’s Head Office in Sydney offers work experience for Year 10 high school students. A new program has been developed and is designed to give students insight into the work of economists.
Eligibility: Students in Year 10 who are interested in studying economics in Years 11-12.
When: 11–15 November 2019
Where: 65 Martin Place, Sydney, NSW 2000
Number of places: 12 students (maximum one per school)
During the one-week program, students will learn about the roles and functions of the nation’s central bank and how to interpret economic graphs, as well as shadowing one of the Bank’s economists as they complete a series of core activities.
Applications for the November 2019 Work Experience program will be open from 11–20 September 2019.

Apply for funding to see your idea come to life.
Teachers play a pivotal role in helping students learn good money habits.To help teachers do this, MoneySmart is working with primary and secondary principal associations to fund financial literacy project in schools. Funding is worth up to $5000 for each project. MoneySmart is looking for new, creative project ideas that:
- teach kids how to budget and plan.
- integrates financial literacy across the whole school.
- incorporates cross sector collaboration.
- boosts parents’ understanding of good money management.
- includes the local community.

EBE NSW Professional Development Event – 2019 EBE NSW Economics Update Conference

EBE NSW is excited to be running its annual Economics Update Conference on Friday 30 August 2019. Sponsored by CPA Australia, this course will provide Economics teachers with up to date information and statistics. Each session has been specifically linked to syllabus content.
This event will be hosted at CPA Australia’s Sydney office in Harrington St, Sydney (5 minute walk from Circular Quay Railway Station).

Australian Business Economists Student Conference – Economics and schools – The future of wellbeing

2019 HSC Economics and Business Studies Student Workshops
UTS Business School is hosting a series of workshops designed for year 11 and 12 students studying Economics and/or Business Studies on Wednesday 24 April 2019 from 1.15pm – 5.30pm. Developed in consultation with leading high school economics and business studies teachers from across NSW, each 1-hour session will be delivered by an expert in their field.
Following the conclusion of the workshop, UTS Business School will be hosting its Undergraduate Information Evening where you can explore the university’s Business, Economics, Management and Accounting options.

2019 Business Educators Australasia Plan Your Own Enterprise (PYOE) Competition
The Business Educators Australasia Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition (PYOE) encourages secondary school students to apply their business education to a real life scenario. Working individually or in small groups, participants are asked to devise a creative enterprise idea and submit a business plan, explaining how their great idea could become a profitable business.
For teachers, the competition is a valuable tool to enhance the business education curriculum and support them as they develop the next generation of business leaders For students, it helps to build valuable work and life skills. The competition requires business insight, practical financial skills and a creative flair for problem solving.
Economics and Business Educators NSW runs the competition in NSW. To enter, students need to devise a creative enterprise idea and submit a 3000 word business plan, explaining how their great idea could become a profitable business. The competition has two divisions with fantastic prizes up for grabs:
- Division one – Open to individual student entries, submitted by students of any age, attending a registered secondary school.
- Division two – Group entries (maximum of six students), submitted by students of any age, attending a registered secondary school.
NSW entries are due by Thursday 30 August 2019 (Term 3, Week 6) by 5pm. These will be marked, and finalists in both divisions will be invited to the NSW Awards Ceremony. At this awards ceremony, the winner in each division will be announced. The NSW Division One winner will receive an iPad mini 4 Wi-Fi 128GB (valued at $579). Certificates and other prizes will also be awarded.
National judging will be based on the paper entry and will be conducted in October, 2019. Winners will be advised by end of October 2019.
This competition can be incorporated into assessment tasks for both Commerce (Option 11: Running a Business) and Year 11 Business Studies (Topic: Business planning). Click here for a sample assessment task. Email EBE NSW if you would like a Microsoft Word version of the sample assessment task.
Amanda Ritter has developed a unit of work based on the PYOE Competition which can be accessed here. The PYOE Competition could form the content for a Commerce “school – developed option” (see pages 48 and 49 in the NSW Education Standards Authority Commerce Year 7 – 10 Syllabus).
All students who enter the competition will receive a Certificate of Participation for their job portfolios.

2019 Tax, Super + You Competition
The 2019 Tax, Super + You Competition is for students in Years 7 – 12. The competition requires students to think outside the box and develop creative products that highlight the value of tax and/or super in the community. Students do not need to be tax experts to enter. Taking part in this competition will not only give students an insight into the value of tax and super, but also give them the chance to win a share of over $6,000 in prizes.
There are two categories:
- Junior (Year 7– 9)
- Senior (Year 10–12)
Entries open Monday 3 June 2019 and close Friday 23 August 2019.

Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade iSAY Competition
The Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade invites Australian year 11 and 12 high school students to enter the iSAY Competition. Students will be required to write an essay of up to 750 words.
Essay question: Australia is part of the global economy. How has international trade and globalisation benefited Australia and your city, town or community?

2018 EBE NSW CPA Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition NSW Awards Ceremony – 11 October 2018
EBE NSW recognised the NSW Plan Your Own Enterprise (PYOE) winners at the annual NSW awards ceremony on 11 October 2018 at Commonwealth Bank Place South (11 Harbour Street, Sydney). At the ceremony, prizes and certificates were awarded to the NSW student winners and their schools. Parents were in attendance to celebrate the success of their child, as well as teachers. NSW Division 1 Winner successful at the 2018 Business Educators Australasia Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition National Awards Ceremony – 11 October 2018
The Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition NSW Division 1 winner, Julian Annison from Inaburra School, represented NSW at the Business Educators Australasia National PYOE Awards Ceremony in Sydney at Commonwealth Bank Place South (11 Harbour Street, Sydney) on 11 October 2018, following the NSW Awards Ceremony. Julian joined the division one finalists from the other states and territories of Australia. Julian was successful in being the national Division 1 winner for his business plan, AspergerAssist. Well done to Julian on this significant achievement at a national level.
The national Division 2 winner was Eloise Webster, Olivia Pietralla and Rubi Brady from Camberwall Girls Grammar School in Victoria for their business plan, Weasley’s Wash n’ Walk.

Reserve Bank of Australia – Topical Talk
The Reserve Bank of Australia has now opened registrations for a new Topical Talk. The series of Topical Talks provide opportunities for educators to enhance their understanding of economic concepts and developments in the Australian economy through hearing insights from an economist on a relevant topic. The talks are free of charge and aimed at a range of educators, from secondary school to the tertiary sector.
Daniel Rees (Head of Macroeconomic Modelling, Economic Analysis) will be presenting on Wealth and Consumption at 9.30am on Monday, 25 March 2019 at the Reserve Bank of Australia, 65 Martin Place, Sydney NSW 2000. The talk will present some of the Bank’s recent research on the relationship between household wealth and consumption. It will also discuss some of the potential implications of increases and declines in household wealth over recent years, and how this might depend on broader macroeconomic conditions.

2019 ASX Schools Sharemarket Game (2019 Game 1 begins on 7 March 2019 )
While you teach your students about investing and the Sharemarket, they can put into practice what they are learning by playing the Sharemarket Game. Students receive a virtual $50,000 they can invest over a 10 week period, in 200 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as they would get in the live market so this is as close to real life share trading as you can get.
As a result of playing the Game your students will:
- Develop their knowledge of the sharemarket.
- Learn how to research companies.
- Discover the importance of wise investment decisions.
- Gain a greater knowledge of economic and world events.
- Begin to learn more about investing which is beneficial for their future.
2019 Game 1 begins on 7 March 2019 and ends on 15 May 2019.

2019 NSW Premier’s Teacher Scholarships for Commerce, Economics and/or Business Studies teachers
The NSW Premier’s Teacher Scholarships provide $10,000 or $15,000 for a five-week study tour within Australia or overseas.
The scholarships, funded by corporate supporters and private foundations, are open to teachers in NSW government and non-government schools, TAFE NSW campuses and early childhood centres. Scholarships are awarded in the year prior to the study tour.
The majority of scholarships are for school-based teachers to explore best practice in their chosen subject area. The program aims to deliver significant outcomes for scholarship recipients, students, teacher colleagues and school communities.
The NSW Premier’s Teacher Scholarships program is an initiative of the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet and administered by the NSW Department of Education.
The two scholarships being offered to Commerce, Economics and/or Business Studies teachers are:
- Premier’s Reserve Bank of Australia Economics Scholarship
($15,000) - Premier’s First State Super Financial Literacy and Capability Scholarship
($15,000)

Australia’s second longest serving Prime Minister discusses the key economic challenges facing Australia and the world in general, and how these are driven and responded to by public policy. This is a rare opportunity to engage with perhaps the most influential shaper of public policy in Australia over the past 40 years.
Alternately hosted by UTS and University of Sydney, the Warren Hogan Memorial Lecture – devoted to the economic analysis of public policy issues – commemorates Professor Warren Pat Hogan (1929–2009), an eminent Australian economist who worked across a range of fields including in the areas of economic policy, capital theory, financial intermediation and prudential bank regulation.

NSW Curriculum Review
On 13 May 2018, the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Education Rob Stokes announced that NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority) will undertake a review of the NSW curriculum to ensure it equips students to continue to contribute to Australian society into the 21st century. NESA has engaged Professor Geoff Masters, CEO of the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to lead the review.

2018 Business Educators Australasia (BEA) Award of Recognition – Bronwyn Hession
Congraulations to Bronwyn Hession (EBE NSW Life Member) who was awarded the 2018 Business Educators Australasia (BEA) Award of Recognition for Outstanding Service to Business Educators Australasia and its affiliate Associations at the 2018 BEA Biennial Conference which was held in Canberra between the 3rd and 5th October 2018.
Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies: A teacher professional learning tour of East Coast USA
Dates: 8th – 18th January, 2020
Academy Travel, in conjunction with Economics and Business Educators NSW, is delighted to present an outstanding professional development opportunity for teachers of Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce.
The itinerary begins in Washington DC, where teachers will tour key government organisations and significant landmarks. Continuing to New York City, participants will explore the Financial District, international law and order, and the world of commerce.
In addition, the itinerary includes a series of guided tours and site visits with experts. There is also time at leisure for sightseeing, shopping and exploring.
