2016 Business Educators Australasia Biennial Conference – “Thinking, Teaching, Doing Business”
The 2016 Business Educators Australasia national conference will be held in Hobart, Tasmania on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 September 2016. The conference will provide a forum for the teaching and learning of business and economics education and associated studies for colleagues across Australia. A particular emphasis will be on the development of the Australian Curriculum. As EBE NSW is an affiliate member of Business Educators Australasia, EBE NSW members can attend the conference at a discounted rate. There are also low student teacher rates available.
Currently the Conference Planning Committee is calling for expressions of interest for papers and workshops. More details can be found on the home page of the Business Educators Australasia website at www.bea.asn.au which will take you to the conference website.
EBE NSW is offering one of its members a professional development grant to attend the 2016 Business Educators Australasia Biennial Conference. The grant will pay for all flights, accommodation at the conference venue (Wrest Point Hotel) and the conference registration fees. More details will be available soon.

2015 CPA Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition National Awards Ceremony – 14 October 2015
The Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition NSW Division 1 winner, Joshua Spicer, represented NSW at the national PYOE awards ceremony in Melbourne on 14 October 2015 held by Business Educators Australasia. Unfortunately Joshua was not successful at the national level of the competition but he is to be congratulated for getting this far in the competition.
The individual category at the national level was won by Jonathan Nagappa of Christ Church Grammar School in WA. His business idea was SurfScout, a remote controlled drone service to spot sharks and keep Australia’s swimmers safe.
The group category at the national level was won by Harrison Wallace, Peter Mercado and Robert Jiang from The Hutchins School in Tasmania. Their business, The Tapas Truck, provides affordable Spanish food to Hobart residents.

Chartered Accountants Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund has been established to assist marginalized and disadvantaged Australians pursue tertiary education through an undergraduate university course with an accounting focus. These scholarships are being offered by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and an individual may make application for a grant. Applications for the March 2016 university year will open on 7 December 2015 and close on 21 January, 2016. The scholarship grant is for the 2016 University year.

CommBank’s Teaching Awards recognise and reward teachers from schools across Australia who are making an outstanding contribution to developing the essential money management skills of their students.
If you are a teacher of Kindergarten to Year 12 and teaching your students’ money management skills you can apply for a Teaching Award. There are 15 awards of $10,000 for each teacher to invest in their school’s financial education program. In addition, each winning teacher will receive a personal reward of $2,000.

Have your say! Register to vote in the 2015 Quality Teaching Council election
Quality Teaching Council (QTC) elections for the eleven practising teacher/principal positions will take place in the second half of 2015. The QTC plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the teaching profession in NSW. Council members, who are either elected by their peers or appointed by the Minister, are directly involved in developing teacher accreditation policy in NSW. The QTC provides advice to the Board of Studies,Teaching and Educational Standards on a range of matters related to teacher accreditation. The Council also recommends initial teacher education programs for endorsement and endorses providers of continuing professional development for teachers. To vote in the QTC Council elections teachers need to be registered on the electoral roll. Teachers who are accredited with an active accreditation status are automatically included on the electoral roll. Others (‘existing teachers’) need to register to be included on the electoral roll. 2015 CPA Plan Your Own Enterprise (PYOE) Competition
The CPA Australia Plan Your Own Enterprise competition encourages secondary school students to apply their business education to a real life scenario.
Participants are asked to devise a creative enterprise idea and submit a business plan, explaining how their great idea could become a profitable business.
For teachers, the competition is a valuable tool to enhance the business education curriculum. For students, it helps to build valuable work and life skills.
CPA Australia partners with Business Educators Australasia to support teachers in developing the next generation of business leaders through the PYOE competition. Accounting is more than number crunching; the competition requires business insight, practical financial skills and a creative flair for problem solving.
There are two divisions (individual student entries and group entries) with fantastic prizes up for grabs. All students receive a certificate for their job portfolios.
Entries from NSW students are due Wednesday 2 September 2015 (Term 3, Week 8)
NSW winners will be recognised at the NSW PYOE awards ceremony. The national PYOE awards ceremony will be held on 14 October 2015 in Melbourne.

2014 EBE NSW CPA Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition NSW Awards Ceremony – 20 October 2014
EBE NSW recognized the Plan Your Own Enterprise ( PYOE) NSW winners at our annual NSW awards ceremony on 20 October 2014 at the Sydney office of CPA Australia together with Mr Anthony Matis, General Manager of Education, CPA Australia. At the ceremony, prizes and certificates were awarded to the NSW student winners and their teachers. Parents were in attendance as well to celebrate the success of their child. Congratulations to the following winners and their teachers from NSW:
– Division 1 (Individual entry) – Emma Quoyle, Loreto Normanhurst for her business plan“Em Corp” (Teacher: Ms Alexandra Osborne).

Congratulations to Emma Quoyle of Year 11 Business Studies for being awarded 1st Place Winner of Division 1 in the NSW State Segment of the CPA Australia Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition for 2014. Each year at Loreto Normanhurst, Year 11 Business Studies students participate in the competition which encourages students to apply their business education to a real life scenario. It involves planning an innovative business idea and developing comprehensive plans that outline the future prospects for the business. Emma’s winning submission was about the establishment of ‘EmCorp’, a company which provides modified clothing for those who suffer from limited mobility. Emma will be attending the National CPA Australia 2014 Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition Presentation in Melbourne next week, and we wish her all the best.
Unique scholarship opportunity for teachers of Commerce, Economics or Business Studies
As a result of the generous support of First State Super, applications are invited for the NSW Premier’s First State Super Financial Literacy Scholarship. This $15,000 scholarship involves organisation of a study tour either within Australia or overseas, to investigate and report on effective teaching strategies for financial literacy. Research is to be completed by June 2016.

Economics and Business Educators NSW wins 2014 ASIC MoneySmart Week Award
On 2 September 2014, EBE NSW President, Joe Alvaro, and EBE NSW Director, Bronwyn Hession attended the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) MoneySmart 2014 Awards Presentation Dinner to accept a Highly Commended Award for EBE NSW in the Education category on behalf of the EBE NSW Board of Directors, staff and members. The MoneySmart Week Awards recognise the outstanding achievements in financial literacy across five categories, including education. EBE NSW is proud of its work in the area of financial literacy and it was an honour to receive this award.
The award citation and judges’ comments appear below:
Economics and Business Educators (EBE NSW) has been supporting secondary teachers of financial literacy and their students on an ongoing and sustained basis since its creation in 1968. EBE NSW specialises in providing classroom and syllabus focused professional development courses for teachers of financial literacy. Designed by practicing classroom teachers and academics, these courses encourage interaction between high quality stakeholders in financial literacy and teachers who are on the frontline, teaching financial literacy in classrooms. EBE NSW has designed, conducted and evaluated professional development events focusing on financial literacy over the years, including
- 2014 EBE Annual Conference;
- Revamping and Resourcing Commerce; and
- The EBE Journal – Journal of the Economics and Business Educators NSW.
The EBE NSW has also been very active in advocating for the inclusion of financial literacy in the Australian Curriculum and engaging teachers with consultation processes. As financial literacy is given increased attention in the curriculum, EBE NSW will continue to design and implement effective professional development courses using the expertise and skills of its members and its connections with stakeholders in the financial literacy sector.
Judges Comment
The Judges highly commended Economics & Business Educators NSW for the great work they are doing, and the importance of their work in the community. They have been a key player for several decades and have made a major contribution to financial literacy. Economics & Business Educators NSW have played a vital role connecting the corporate and education sectors to reinvigorate secondary school subjects and hold a respected annual conference.
EBE NSW congratulates Wingham High School who was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award in the education category and commends the excellent work the school is doing in the area of financial literacy. And congratulations to Enactus University of Western Australia who also won a Highly Commended Award in the education category.

Bursaries for Business Studies Teachers to Singapore for the 13th – 15th February 2015

The S P Jain School of Global Management is offering bursaries for principals and teachers to travel to their Singapore Campus for a retreat on 13-15 February, 2015. The purpose of the retreat is to introduce people to S P Jain and provide opportunities to meet and network with other teachers from around the world. The bursaries would cover return airfares up to $1,300 per person and three nights’ accommodation in Singapore.
S P Jain is an Australian-based higher education provider offering undergraduate and postgraduate business degrees. Whilst it has a campus in Sydney, S P Jain believes it is important to show key personnel from high schools their other locations, given their students are required to study in three different countries (Singapore, United Arab Emirates (Dubai) and Australia (Sydney) to complete their degrees.
Interested persons need to email Biljana Vojdanoska (biljana@spjain.org) to express their interest in the attending the retreat under a bursary. Responses should very briefly mention why students of that particular high school would be good candidates for an international degree program like ours. Responses are due by 12:00pm Tuesday, 3 February 2015.

ACARA releases Economics and Business Curriculum
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has released the Australian Curriculum for Economics and Business describing it as ‘available for use’, pending approval post the Australian Governments current Review of the Australian Curriculum. The Executive Committees of EBE NSW and Business Educators Australasia have both submitted responses to the review, seeing it as an opportunity to restate key issues raised by members during the consultation on the draft curriculum in 2013. The Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW has not yet revealed its planning in relation to HSIE K- 6, Commerce 7 – 10 or Stage 6 Economics and Business Studies in NSW schools, other than restating that schools should follow the current syllabuses.
