EBE NSW President receives prestigious award
Congratulations to our President Joe Alvaro who has been awarded the Professional Teachers’ Council of NSW Outstanding Professional Service Award, 2013. The awards, announced on World Teachers’ Day, recognise the outstanding professional contribution to education made by those who are active leaders in professional associations. Joe was nominated by his peers, the EBE NSW Board of Directors. The award recognises Joe’s passion, commitment and tireless energy in driving EBE NSW forward. The Hon. Adrian Piccoli, MP, Minister for Education NSW will present the awards later this month. Well deserved Joe.
EBE NSW Professional Development Event Report – HSC Business Studies Human Resources (Topic 4) Information Evening held on 13 March 2013
The above NSW Institute of Teachers’ endorsed EBE NSW PD event (held in association with The University of Sydney Business School) was an outstanding success. Held at The University of Sydney, participants were able to hear Dr. Will Harvey speak on “Attracting, retaining and developing talent” and “Ethics, Reputation and CSR”. Participants increased and updated their knowledge of the Board of Studies NSW HSC Human Resources topic, as the event examined contemporary business issues, using actual business case studies. Participants were able to ask questions and had opportunities to network with other participants. Teachers can learn a lot from academics who are experts with regards to the subject matter we teach and who share the findings of their research and practice through events such as this one. Some positive feedback about this event was received from participants:

Unique Business Case Study opportunity – visit to Fairfax Printing Plant, 27 September 2013
EBE NSW in collaboration with Fairfax Media invites teachers of Business Studies and/or Commerce to participate in an industry visit to the the Fairfax Printing Plant at Chullora, Sydney on Friday 27 September, 8am to 10am. This business case study is ideal for the Operations topic in Business Studies and the Running a Business topic in Commerce. Come and tour the plant, receive expert information and see if this is an experience your students would benefit from.

EBE NSW Director, Professor John Lodewijks, wrote an article for The Australian on 8 July 2013 titled “The case for economics”.
In his introduction, Professor Lodewijks, writes:
“Why does a case for economics need to be made in the first place? Surely economics is the foundation discipline for studies in business, finance, accounting and related fields. Acknowledged as the queen of the social sciences, the scientific community recognises the value of the discipline with the award of Nobel Prizes.”

Australian College of Educators recognises outstanding Economics Educators
EBE NSW congratulates Kim Jackson (Principal, Killarney Heights High School), past President of EBE NSW, and Ian Moore (Head of Economics, Trinity College Sydney) textbook author and frequent presenter at EBE conferences.
Kim and Ian were conferred the award of Fellow of the Australia College of Educators (ACE) at an awards ceremony on 2 August at Homebush. These prestigious awards recognise leadership, innovation in educational practice, and support for the profession. The citations for each of the awards made explicit the contribution of Kim and Ian to the teaching of Economics and Business. EBE Director Bronwyn Hession and past president Lyn Kirkby attended the award ceremony and commented that many participants noted the strong representation of outstanding Economics educators. EBE NSW hopes that the 2014 ACE awards will too shine the spotlight on excellence in the teaching of Economics and Business education.

2013 Commonwealth Bank Foundation Teaching Awards now open
The releases of the draft Australian curriculum in Economics and Business once again reminds us of the importance of consumer and financial literacy for all students K-12. More teachers now are exploring innovative ways of supporting their students in the acquisition of essential life skills of money management.
If you are one of these teachers apply for a teaching award and grant of $10,000 to support the teaching and learning of financial literacy in your school. 15 awards have been made available by the CBF. The awards close on 7 June.

Economics and Business Educators NSW (EBE NSW) members the first in the nation to feedback to ACARA
EBE NSW members will be amongst the first teachers in the country to provide initial feedback to ACARA on the draft Years 5 – 10 Australian Curriculum: Economics and Business released on 6 May by ACARA.
Robert Randall, CEO ACARA will address teachers at EBE’s Annual Conference to be held at Pymble Ladies College, Pymble on Friday 17 May. This forum, also to be addressed by Lindsay Swan, Inspector HSIE NSW Board of Studies, will provide an opportunity for teachers K – 12 to engage, as a community of practice, in critical deliberations, as the curriculum now moves closer to its final form.
ACARA released the draft curriculum on 6 May after extensive national consultation with the profession on the draft Shape Paper and future directions for the curriculum.
EBE NSW acknowledges the expert input and advice contributed by the ACARA Advisory Group, curriculum writers from across Australia, and the ACARA project manager Susan Caldis in realising the target of production and publication of the draft curriculum for Economics and Business.
In addition to the Annual Conference on 17 May, EBE has devised a plan for consultation with members including the establishment of a specific purpose working party and a webinar to canvass further opinion and feedback. It is critical that individual teachers and school faculties respond to ACARA and provide feedback about the draft curriculum.

This is, as ACARA has stated, ‘a significant step forward in the education of all young Australians in relation to the study of Economics and Business’.

Annual Conference Early Bird Registrations — Closing Soon!
EBE’s 2013 Annual Conference on 17 May at Pymble Ladies’ College Pymble will provide key updates on the Australian Curriculum in Economics and Business by ACARA and the NSW Board of Studies. Other keynote sessions will provide updates on recent developments in Globalisation and Government Policies. Workshops will provide rich opportunities for teachers to gain new ideas and strategies for teaching and assessment in Legal studies, Commerce, Business Studies and Economics.

Annual Conference Professional Development Grants
Are you a teacher from a regional area and a financial member of EBE NSW? EBE NSW is funding the full conference registration and a contribution to travel expenses for two teachers from regional NSW. Teachers who wish to apply are asked to email EBE a statement of 500 words or less outlining the expected benefits and learnings to be gained by attending the conference and networking with other teachers, and how those learnings would be shared with teachers from your school/region. Applications should be emailed to admin@ebe.nsw.edu.au no later than 7 May 2013. Applicants should include their name, school, address, email address, NSW Institute number ( if applicable) and EBE membership number. All applicants should ensure that they have their principal’s permission to attend the conference.
Australian Curriculum: Economics and Business
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has released a draft curriculum for public consultation of the Years 5–10 Australian Curriculum: Economics and Business.
The draft curriculum is available on ACARA’s Australian Curriculum Consultation website. You will need to register on this website to read, review, download or print the draft curriculum and to complete an online consultation survey.
Following consultation and in response to the feedback the draft Years 5–10 Australian Curriculum: Economics and Business will be revised for ACARA Board and Ministerial approval prior to publication on the Australian Curriculum website in late 2013. Consultation is open until 19 July 2013.
The final Shape paper for the Australian curriculum in Economics and Business has also been published.
Draft Years 3 – 10 Australian Curriculum: Civics and Citizenship now open for public consultation
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has released the draft Australian Curriculum: Civics and Citizenship for public consultation.
The Civics and Citizenship Knowledge and Understanding strand in the draft curriculum comprises three key focus areas at each year level: Government and democracy; Laws and citizens; and Citizenship, diversity and identity.
What do you want taught in primary school? Years 7 and 8? Years 9 and 10? How might the 3-10 curriculum influence what subjects are chosen by Year 10 students when selecting senior subjects?
ACARA has produced an information sheet about the draft curriculum.
Teachers, academics, parents, students and other community members are welcome to make a written submission to ACARA.
EBE NSW also welcomes comments about the draft curriculum as it will be preparing a formal response to ACARA. Please send comments to admin@ebe.nsw.edu.au

EBE NSW is moving
A growth in enrolments at Leichhardt Public School has resulted in the Department of Education and Communities resumption of the PTC NSW building at Leichhardt, home to EBE NSW, GTA NSW, MANSWA, ETANSW and PTC NSW. As of 1 February no alternative suitable site has been identified and as a result EBE NSW is homeless. Due to our dedicated office staff we are however maintaining all member services to the best of our ability given the difficult and rather sudden circumstances. Our PD program will go ahead as advertised and our phone and email is diverted. Please direct any queries to admin@ebe.nsw.edu.au.

HSC Business Studies Human Resources (Topic 4) Information Evening

This information evening will be presented by Will Harvey from The University of Sydney Business School. It will enable teachers of the NSW Board of Studies HSC Business Studies course to increase and update their knowledge of the Human Resources topic. Will Harvey will examine the contribution of human resource management to business performance through examining contemporary business issues and actual business case studies. There will be an opportunity to ask questions. Teachers will return to their Business Studies classroom with an increased understanding of the Human Resources topic which they will be able to pass onto their students, and with new ideas and resources.

Teaching Preliminary Course Business Studies, Economics or Legal Studies for the first time?
EBE NSW kicks off its 2013 PD program with a PD event which will cater for teachers teaching Preliminary Course Business Studies, Economics or Legal Studies for the first time.
Monday 25 February
Sydney College of the Arts, Rozelle

Sessions will be led by experienced subject experts, and participants will receive programming and assessment resources.

This is also a great refresher opportunity for those who have not yet taught the new Business Studies (2012 HSC) or the new Legal Studies (2011 HSC) syllabuses.
Australian curriculum for Economics and Business
ACARA has published the final Shape paper for the Australian curriculum in Economics and Business. The draft curriculum is now being developed by a team of writers, with Dr Alex Millmow as the lead writer or ‘coach’. ACARA has published details of the timeline for further development of the curriculum and the composition of the Advisory Group for the Writing Phase includes EBE NSW Directors Professor John Lodewijks and Rhonda Thompson. In addition, BEA Councillor Mandy Hudson from WA is also a member of the group. July 2013 will be a critical time for teachers as the consultation on the draft curriculum commences.
EBE NSW invites members who wish to be part of an EBE group to lead the development of EBE’s response to the draft curriculum to send an email to admin@ebe.nsw.edu.au, providing your school contact details. Members who participated in the 2013 webinar on the draft Shape Paper will automatically be included in the group.

ASX Schools Sharemarket Game 2013 – Registrations open 7 February
2013 is the 30th anniversary of this game which continues to provide engaging and curriculum relevant learning opportunities for students and teachers, without having to leave the classroom.

With a virtual $50,000 to invest over 10 weeks, students create their own share portfolio, trade online and compete against other students for a total prize pool of over $17,000.
Reflecting real market conditions, the Game encourages students to:
- develop their knowledge of the sharemarket
- learn how to research companies
- discover the importance of wise investment decisions
- begin to learn more about investing which is beneficial for their future
Teacher resources are available, including detailed lesson plans with teacher notes, assignment ideas, worksheets, videos and posters. Entry is free and open to all secondary schools in Australia.

University of Western Sydney – Bridges to Higher Education
EBE’s colleagues at UWS have asked us to remind teachers about this valuable initiative which was launched in September 2012.
“Bridges to Higher Education” is a consortium of Sydney-based universities (UWS, Macquarie, Sydney, UTS and Australian Catholic University) that was awarded significant Australian Government funding (2012-14) for a wide range of programs and projects focused on expanding participation in higher education, specifically for students from communities under represented in higher education. One of these projects is called “Bridges Connect” and it aims to utilise technology to build capacity, raise aspirations and provide academic enrichment in schools in these communities. The talks are the first in a series to be produced through Bridges Connect. Professional development sessions for teachers in the use of technology are also being run through this project, with further activities in the pipeline.
