Teaching the Preliminary Course (Year 11) in Economics for the first time?
Date: Tuesday 23 November 2021 – 4.25pm – 6.45pm
Venue: Online via Zoom
Presenter: Nicholas Ward – Head Teacher – Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) at Cherrybrook Technology High School and EBE NSW Director
This course has been designed specifically for:
- beginning teachers and experienced teachers who are teaching the preliminary course (Year 11) in Economics for the first time.
- teachers who may have already taught the preliminary course (Year 11) in Economics in the past but who need a refresher course.
- teachers who intend to teach the preliminary course (Year 11) in Economics in the near future.
- Economics student teachers.
This course will focus on the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Economics Preliminary (Year 11) syllabus and cover:
- effective teaching and learning strategies designed to engage students, based on the current NESA syllabuses.
- assessment procedures and techniques.
- useful teaching and learning resources.
Announcement from the EBE NSW President about the 2021 EBE NSW Annual Conference and online 2020 HSC examination review sessions
This year the EBE NSW Annual Conference Organising Committee had organised an exciting 2021 EBE NSW annual conference which was to be held at UTS on Friday 23 July 2021 with one of our keynote speakers being the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Philip Lowe. Unfortunately the Sydney COVID-19 lockdown meant we could not hold the conference. We were hoping to hold it at a later date this year but this will now not be possible given the extended lockdown period. Planning will soon begin for our 2022 professional development program and this will include an annual conference where members will be able to gather together and engage in professional learning across the subjects we represent and support at what is the peak conference for Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce teachers in NSW.
All 2021 EBE NSW annual conference registration fees that had been paid will be refunded to attendees.
We have been able to organise some of the 2020 HSC examination review workshops which were part of the 2021 EBE NSW annual conference program to occur online. See details below. We hope you can attend these workshops if they will be useful for you.

2021 Reserve Bank of Australia Teacher Immersion Event
The 2021 Reserve Bank of Australia Teacher Immersion Event will be held on Tuesday, 16 November 2021 This professional learning event provides an excellent opportunity for secondary school Economics teachers across Australia to expand their knowledge of current economic issues and deepen their understanding of economic concepts. The event will feature short addresses by the Governor, Deputy Governor and Chief Economist, along with other senior economists from the RBA, and there will be opportunities to ask questions.
Due to COVID-19, this year’s event will be held online via Zoom. In order to ensure that the event is interactive, places will be capped. For teachers who are unable to attend live, the event will be recorded and made available on the Bank’s website.

Economics and Business Educators NSW invites you to the 2021 EBE NSW Annual Conference, which will be held at the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, at the University of Technology Sydney on Friday 23 July 2021.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Philip Lowe
Philip Lowe is Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia. Mr Lowe holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.Comm (Honours) in Economics/Econometrics from the University of New South Wales. He has authored numerous papers, including on the linkages between monetary policy and financial stability. He commenced as Governor on 18 September 2016. He is Chair of the Reserve Bank Board and Payments System Board, and Chair of the Council of Financial Regulators. He is a member of the Financial Stability Board. Prior to his current role, he held the positions of Deputy Governor, Assistant Governor (Economic) and Assistant Governor (Financial System). He also spent two years at the Bank for International Settlements working on financial stability issues. Mr Lowe is Chair of the Financial Markets Foundation for Children and a director of The Anika Foundation. He is also Chair of the Committee on the Global Financial System of the Bank for International Settlements.Mr Lowe is a signatory to The Banking and Finance Oath.
Rami Ykmour – The Unorthodox Entrepreneur – navigating the economic and legal challenges of COVID to achieve business success.
Rami Ykmour is a successful Australian entrepreneur, who has established multiple food and hospitality businesses, as well as his own personal brand. Rami is best-known for his restaurant chain RASHAYS®, which operates 30+ locations on the east coast of Australia. His business portfolio also features hospitality services and supplier Ruomky Business Enterprises (which includes food manufacturing facility, Ruomky), and in 2020 expanded to include GUEST GUARD® (modular customer protection screens), offering practical solutions to keep hospitality businesses afloat during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shutdowns. Following an increase in his media profile in early 2020, Rami launched his own personal brand, Rami Ykmour, across a wide range of social media channels. He has also launched the I AM RAMI Podcast. Rami uses both channels to give professional advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, and other established business leaders alike.

Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies: A teacher professional learning tour of East Coast USA

Academy Travel, in conjunction with Economics and Business Educators NSW, is delighted to present an outstanding professional development opportunity for teachers of Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce.
The itinerary begins in Washington DC, where teachers will tour key government organisations and significant landmarks. Continuing to New York City, participants will explore the Financial District, international law and order, and the world of commerce.
In addition, the itinerary includes a series of guided tours and site visits with experts. There is also time at leisure for sightseeing, shopping and exploring.

Teaching HSC Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies for the first time?
As we approach Term 4 and Year 11 students prepare to begin their HSC courses, EBE NSW is mindful of teachers who will be teaching HSC Economics, HSC Business Studies and HSC Legal Studies for the first time. It is a challenging task and EBE NSW has been assisting new teachers of these courses for many years.
EBE NSW is running professional development Zoom webinars focused on each of the above courses, presented by EBE NSW directors who are experienced teachers of these courses.
Please note these courses are also open to teachers already teaching these courses and who need a refresher course, and to student teachers.

Whole-day in-person professional development for teachers of economics content in Years 10 through 12

This program focuses on enhancing teachers’ understanding of content relevant to economics concepts, as well as constructing economics lessons with input from experienced economics teachers.
