EBE NSW Professional Development Event - Teaching Commerce for the first time?

“Teaching Commerce for the first time?” is a NESA endorsed course that has been designed for teachers who will be teaching the NESA Commerce Syllabus (2019) for the first time in 2021. It will also be beneficial for teachers who have taught Commerce in the past and are in need of a refresher course. This course will look at effective teaching and learning strategies designed to engage students. It will also cover assessment procedures and techniques. Useful teaching and learning resources will be available for each participant.

The Australian Business Economists Schools Conference – COVID: Impacts on the economy and the labour market, monetary policy responses

The Australian Business Economists Schools Conference – “COVID: Impacts on the economy and the labour market, monetary policy responses” will begin with a highly relevant presentation from a senior Reserve Bank official. It will follow with a panel session featuring four young and successful economists who will talk about their education journey, career and economics in the real world.
This panel session will include a focus on how the study of economics has been critical to their career success. The conference will conclude with an open discussion in which teachers and students will have the opportunity to ask questions.

EBE NSW Professional Development Event - Teaching the HSC (Year 12) Economics course for the first time?

Student enrolment numbers in economics have starkly declined in Australian high schools over recent decades. Furthermore, diversity among economics students on the basis of gender and socioeconomic background has also declined during this time. These statistics prompt us to ask what has contributed towards these trends?
In the “To study (or not to study) Economics: Results of the RBA student survey” webinar, Tanya Livermore and Mike Major from the Reserve Bank of Australia will share the results of a comprehensive survey of secondary school students. The survey was commissioned by the RBA to better understand students’ perceptions of economics and their motivations to study (or not to study) economics as a subject.
The study reveals that many students lack an interest in, or understanding, of economics as a subject. This webinar will unpack the findings of the survey, including looking closely at the perceptions of female students, and students from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
The webinar will be moderated by Associate Professor Duygu Yengin (Director of Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at the Faculty of Professions, University of Adelaide, and inaugural member of the WEN National Committee). Audience members will have an opportunity to submit questions.

During the “Explore Economics” webinar, economists at the Reserve Bank of Australia will share insights on why they chose to study Economics, their career path and their role. This event supports careers education and is primarily aimed at high school students, undergraduate students, teachers and careers advisors.

On 12 June 2020, education ministers agreed that it was timely to review the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) Foundation – Year 10 Australian Curriculum, which has been in place since 2015.
The Australian Professional Teachers Association (APTA) extends an invite to EBE NSW members to “An APTA Evening with ACARA” – an APTA and ACARA led overview of the Australian Curriculum Review covering its purposes and processes across the various states. The focus will be on the role of professional teachers associations like EBE NSW.

Do you know which subjects make up the Australian Curriculum Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) learning area?
The revised Australian Curriculum: Humanities and Social Sciences Foundation – Year 10 was endorsed by the Education Council in September 2015. The learning area comprises multiple subjects. In the Foundation – Year 10 curriculum, these are: F–6/7 Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), 7–10 History (first introduced in 2010), 7–10 Geography (first introduced in 2013), 7–10 Economics and Business, and 7–10 Civics and Citizenship. F–6/7 HASS comprises four sub-strands: History and Geography (each of which commence in Foundation), Civics and Citizenship (which commences in Year 3) and Economics and Business (which commences in Year 5).
The senior secondary curriculum also comprises multiple subjects: Ancient History, Geography, and Modern History. Ancient History and Modern History were endorsed by the Education Council in December 2012, and Geography was endorsed by the Education Council in July 2013.
Economics, business and law related subject matter is not part ot the Australian Curriculum (HASS senior secondary).

EBE NSW Professional Development Event - Economic Skills in the HSC Economics Course

The HSC Economics course includes a range of mathematical and graphing skills that students (and teachers!) often struggle with. While some of these skills are prescribed in the syllabus, others are not directly mentioned but still appear in HSC examinations. This workshop is a crash course for teachers on the skills they need to teach their Year 12 Economics students. It is ideal for new teachers of economics, or any teachers who want to refresh or refine their knowledge. The session will include explanations of each skill, modelled application of the skills, examples from HSC exams, suggested teaching strategies, and time for you to practice the skills you have learnt.
