2019 EBE NSW Annual conference - Educating the next wave of entrepreneurs by unlocking economics, business and legal minds

Economics and Business Educators NSW invites you to the 2019 EBE NSW Annual Conference, which will be held at the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, at the University of Technology Sydney.
For many years now, this annual event has been the premier conference for teachers of Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce in NSW and from Australian International Schools overseas. The conference provides a unique opportunity for teachers in our subject areas to gather as a community to strengthen professional knowledge, skills and practice.
Our theme this year is “Educating the next wave of entrepreneurs by unlocking economics, business and legal minds” with our keynote entrepreneur speaker, Ms Anni Brownjohn, Founder and Manager of Ozganics, a fast growing manufacturing and development food company that specializes in food products which meet consumers’ need for low allergy and good taste. The conference program for 2019 provides a variety of workshop opportunities on areas including 2018 NESA HSC examination feedback , effective teaching and learning strategies for Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce, and content areas for Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce. There will also be a workshop focusing on the new NESA Commerce Syllabus (2019).
The conference will provide teachers with valuable networking opportunities with other teachers beyond their own school. There will also be a range of exhibitors at the conference providing delegates with an opportunity to obtain information about the latest teaching and learning resources available for Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce.
EBE NSW is offering two professional learning grants for rural EBE NSW members and I encourage our rural members to apply for these grants.
The 2019 EBE NSW Annual Conference will provide a diverse range of professional learning opportunities for all participants. I look forward to welcoming you to our conference in Sydney on 28 June 2019.
EBE NSW Professional Development Event - Revamping and Resourcing Commerce for the New Syllabus

In 2019 the NSW Education and Standards Authority (NESA) released the Years 7 – 10 Commerce Elective Syllabus (2019). Schools will need to implement the new syllabus from Term 1, 2020. This professional development course will build teacher capacity and support Commerce educators to design effective and engaging teaching and learning programs based on the new Commerce syllabus. Please bring a copy of the new Commerce syllabus to the course.
EBE NSW Professional Development Event - Field Trip – Law Day Out for Legal Studies and Commerce Teachers

Australian law lives in the courts where legislation is interpreted on a daily basis. Legal Studies and Commerce teachers require a deep understanding of how courts work and how they affect the lives of offenders, victims and people in society, as well as strategies to incorporate what happens in the courts into their lessons.
Economics and Business Educators NSW, in association with the Rule of Law Institute of Australia (www.ruleoflaw.org.au), is conducting a field trip for teachers based on experiential learning specifically designed for teachers of the NSW Education and Standards Authority (NESA) Legal Studies and Commerce syllabuses. The course will be facilitated by Jackie Charles, Education Coordinator, at Rule of Law Institute of Australia. Participants will:
- deepen their understanding of the subject matter in the NESA Legal Studies and Commerce (“Law in Society” and “Law in Action” topics) syllabuses and teaching and learning strategies.
- learn from key legal personnel who will address teachers and answer questions.
- visit courts (Local, District and Supreme) and observe court cases, engaging in professional discussions about the cases.
- access a range of legal resources and learn how to use these with their students.
- network with other Legal Studies and Commerce teachers.

Assessment Tasks Resource Bank
Participants are asked to email a Legal Studies or Commerce (based on law related subject matter) assessment task with marking criteria to admin@ebe.nsw.edu.au when registering for the conference. These assessment tasks will be collated and distributed to each participant. Student teachers attending the conference are not required to email an assessment task.
Rural Professional Learning Grant
EBE NSW will be offering a professional learning grant for one teacher who is an EBE NSW member in rural NSW for the 2019 EBE NSW Legal Update Conference. The successful applicant will receive complimentary entry to the conference, and can claim up to $750 travel and accommodation expenses.

Registrations are now open for the next Reserve Bank of Australia Topical Talk – Wage Setting in Australia.
Senior Research Economist James Bishop will give an overview of the different methods of setting employee pay in Australia. It will also discuss some of the factors that influence wages growth in each of these pay-setting methods, including labour market conditions, minimum wages and unionisation.
EBE NSW Professional Development Event - Teaching the HSC Course (Year 12) in Business Studies for the First Time?

This NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority) endorsed course has been designed for beginning teachers and experienced teachers who are teaching the Year 12 HSC Business Studies course for the first time in Term 4 2019/2020. It will also be beneficial for teachers who have already taught this course in the past but are in need of a refresher course or, teachers who intend to teach this course in the near future.
This course will look at effective teaching and learning strategies designed to engage students, based on the current NESA HSC Business Studies syllabus. It will also cover programming ideas, assessment procedures and techniques. Useful teaching and learning resources will be available for each participant.
The Office of the eSafety Commissioner Supporting Digital Wellbeing Professional Learning Program for Teachers
The Office of the eSafety Commissioner Supporting Digital Wellbeing professional learning program for teachers includes three hours of free professional learning through live webinar participation and the completion of a quiz.
The three NESA registered modules include:

- Empowering families and communities
- Inclusion and digital wellbeing

RBA Teacher Immersion Event – 2019
The Reserve Bank’s third Teacher Immersion Event will be held on Friday, 21 June 2019. This event provides an excellent opportunity for secondary school Economics teachers from across Australia to expand their knowledge of current economic issues and deepen their understanding of economic concepts. The event is also an opportunity for teachers to engage in professional discussions with their peers and practicing economists, including the Bank’s Ambassadors.
This one-day NESA-registered professional learning event is limited to 60 teachers, and is typically oversubscribed. For teachers unable to attend, the event will be recorded and made available on the Bank’s website.
The Reserve Bank recognises the need to attract a diverse body of students to economics. To support teachers from a variety of school types and from across Australia, a limited number of rooms have been reserved for attendees from interstate and regional New South Wales to stay at the Bank’s H.C. Coombs Centre. Please express your interest in staying at the Centre when registering for the event (a small fee applies).
Expressions of interest will be open from Monday 8 April 2019 until Monday 22 April 2019.

Reserve Bank of Australia – Topical Talk
The Reserve Bank of Australia has now opened registrations for a new Topical Talk. The series of Topical Talks provide opportunities for educators to enhance their understanding of economic concepts and developments in the Australian economy through hearing insights from an economist on a relevant topic. The talks are free of charge and aimed at a range of educators, from secondary school to the tertiary sector.
Daniel Rees (Head of Macroeconomic Modelling, Economic Analysis) will be presenting on Wealth and Consumption at 9.30am on Monday, 25 March 2019 at the Reserve Bank of Australia, 65 Martin Place, Sydney NSW 2000. The talk will present some of the Bank’s recent research on the relationship between household wealth and consumption. It will also discuss some of the potential implications of increases and declines in household wealth over recent years, and how this might depend on broader macroeconomic conditions.

Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies: A teacher professional learning tour of East Coast USA
Dates: 8th – 18th January, 2020

The itinerary begins in Washington DC, where teachers will tour key government organisations and significant landmarks. Continuing to New York City, participants will explore the Financial District, international law and order, and the world of commerce.
