2018 EBE NSW Annual conference - Transforming our world through economics, business and legal education
Date: Friday 29 June 2018

Economics and Business Educators NSW invites you to the 2018 EBE NSW Annual Conference, which will be held at the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, at the University of Technology Sydney.
For many years now, this annual event has been the premier conference for teachers of Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce in NSW and from Australian International Schools overseas. The conference provides a unique opportunity for teachers in our subject areas to gather as a community to strengthen professional knowledge, skills and practice.
Our theme this year is “Transforming our World through Economics, Business and Legal Education” with our keynote speaker, Ms Katerina Kimmorely,Co-Founder of Pollinate Energy, speaking about how the social enterprise Pollinate Energy is changing lives by providing jobs as well as clean energy to some of the poorest people on the planet through its innovative pricing strategy. The conference program for 2018 provides a variety of workshop opportunities on topics including 2017 NESA HSC examination feedback , effective teaching and learning strategies for Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce, and content areas such as current economic conditions in the Australian economy . A field trip will be offered to “Youth Hostels Australia” focusing on the Marketing and Human Resources key business functions of this business. There will be workshops focusing on the management skills of Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) Heads of Department in relation to developing an effective faculty.
The conference will provide teachers with valuable networking opportunities with other teachers beyond their own school. There will also be a range of exhibitors at the conference providing delegates with an opportunity to obtain information about the latest teaching and learning resources available for Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce.
EBE NSW is offering two professional learning grants for rural EBE NSW members and I encourage our rural members to apply for these grants.
The 2018 EBE NSW Annual Conference will provide a diverse range of professional learning opportunities for all participants. I look forward to welcoming you to our conference in Sydney on 29 June 2018.
Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies: A teacher professional learning tour of East Coast USA
Dates: 8th – 18th January, 2020
Academy Travel is delighted to present this outstanding study tour designed specifically for Australian teachers of Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies. The program has been developed in conjunction with Economics and Business Educators NSW to reflect current teaching content and practice, in line with the relevant syllabuses. The itinerary begins in Washington DC, where teachers will tour key government organisations and significant landmarks. Continuing to New York City, participants will explore the Financial District, international law and order, and the world of commerce. There will of course be free time to enjoy the sights of each city at leisure.
ASIC's MoneySmart online learning and workshops
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s (ASIC) MoneySmart online professional development (PD) courses and face-to-face workshops are designed to build your personal financial capability and support you to integrate consumer and financial literacy education into your teaching programs. The PD courses are aligned to Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

EBE NSW Professional Development Event - Revamping and Resourcing Commerce
Date: Wednesday 5 December 2018

Does your Commerce program need revamping in order to engage more of your students in the 21st century classroom? Do you need activity based resources which will save you time and inspire your students? Then come along to “Revamping and Resourcing Commerce”. Participants will gain fresh insights into the Commerce syllabus and will be able to reflect on and improve their Commerce teaching strategies. The course will provide participants with opportunities for collegial discussions and the sharing of ideas and resources.
Participants are asked to email a Commerce learning task or assessment task with marking criteria to admin@ebe.nsw.edu.au by 30 November 2018. These resources will be collated and distributed to each participant. Student teachers are not required to email a task.
EBE NSW Professional Development Event - 2018 EBE NSW Legal Update Conference

Update and deepen your knowledge in relation to the legal concepts, terms and issues in the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Legal Studies and Commerce syllabuses by hearing from experts in the legal world and legal educators.
EBE NSW Professional Development Event - Teaching the HSC Course (Year 12) in Business Studies for the First Time?
Date: Thursday 20 September 2018

This NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority) endorsed course has been designed for beginning teachers and experienced teachers who are teaching the Year 12 HSC Business Studies course for the first time in Term 4 2017/2018. It will also be beneficial for teachers who have already taught this course in the past but are in need of a refresher course or, teachers who intend to teach this course in the near future.
This course will look at effective teaching and learning strategies designed to engage students, based on the current NESA HSC Business Studies syllabus. It will also cover programming ideas, assessment procedures and techniques. Useful teaching and learning resources will be available for each participant.

Each subject session (attendees choose either the Economics subject session or the Legal Studies subject session) will look at :

Each subject session will be presented by an experienced teacher who will share their own experiences during their challenging early years of teaching and how they coped.
EBE NSW Professional Development Event - Field Trip – Law Day Out for Legal Studies and Commerce Teachers

Venue: Sydney Central Business District Courts (Local, District and Supreme) and Governance Institute of Australia (Level 10, 5 Hunter Street Sydney NSW 2000) for Workshop
Australian law lives in the courts where legislation is interpreted on a daily basis. Legal Studies and Commerce teachers require a deep understanding of how courts work and how they affect the lives of offenders, victims and people in society, as well as strategies to incorporate what happens in the courts into their lessons.
Economics and Business Educators NSW, in association with the Rule of Law Institute of Australia (www.ruleoflaw.org.au), is conducting a field trip for teachers based on experiential learning specifically designed for teachers of the NSW Education and Standards Authority (NESA) Legal Studies and Commerce syllabuses. The course will be facilitated by Jackie Charles, Education Coordinator, at Rule of Law Institute of Australia. Participants will:
- deepen their understanding of the subject matter in the NESA Legal Studies and Commerce (“Law in Society” and “Law in Action” topics) syllabuses and teaching and learning strategies
- learn from key legal personnel who will address teachers and answer questions
- visit courts (Local, District and Supreme) and observe court cases, engaging in professional discussions about the cases
- access a range of legal resources and learn how to use these with their students
- network with other Legal Studies and Commerce teachers.
Economics and Business Educators NSW 2018 NESA Draft Commerce Syllabus Consultation Meeting

The current Commerce syllabus was last revised in 2003. The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) has released a draft Commerce syllabus. The 2018 NESA Draft Commerce Syllabus Consultation Meeting will give you an opportunity to explore the draft Commerce syllabus and have your say. EBE NSW will use this consultation meeting to prepare their submission to NESA with regards to the draft NESA Commerce syllabus.
Refreshments will be provided.

EBE NSW Professional Development Event - 2018 EBE NSW Economics Update Conference

EBE NSW is excited to be running its annual Economics Update Conference on Friday 24 August 2018. Sponsored by CPA Australia, this course will provide Economics teachers with up to date information and statistics. Each session has been specifically linked to syllabus content.
This event will be hosted at CPA Australia’s Sydney office in Harrington St, Sydney (5 minute walk from Circular Quay Railway Station).
Morning Tea and Lunch will be provided. There are discounts for EBE NSW members. Rural EBE NSW members are invited to apply for a professional learning grant – more information is available on the conference program.

The 2018 EBE NSW Annual Conference is to be held at the University of Technology Sydney on Friday 29 June 2018. The theme of the conference is “Transforming our World Through Economics, Business and Legal Education”. Teachers will be empowered to develop engaging ways for students to appreciate their real-world impact on economic, business and legal institutions in order to encourage the development of creative solutions to pressing global issues. The keynote speaker is Katerina Kimmorely, co-founder of the innovative social enterprise Pollinate Energy.
Other key features of the conference include:
- reviews of the 2017 NESA HSC Examinations for Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies by experienced markers, with a consideration of implications for teaching and learning;
- twenty curriculum-linked workshop sessions to choose from, including a business visit to Youth Hostels Australia, a useful case study for Marketing and Human Resources;
- opportunities to network with colleagues; and
- exhibitor displays showcasing the latest educational resources.

Reserve Bank of Australia Teacher Immersion Professional Development Event for Economics Teachers
Date: Friday 15 June 2018
Time: 9am – 4.45pm
Venue: Reserve Bank of Australia Head Office, 65 Martin Place, Sydney
The second event in the Teacher Immersion series will be held on Friday 15 June 2018. This event provides an excellent opportunity for secondary school Economics teachers from across Australia to expand their knowledge of current economic issues and deepen their understanding of economic concepts. In addition to presentations by the Bank’s economists on relevant topics for senior students, we will be hosting a session in which a practicing teacher will showcase how they teach one of these topics, including how some of the resources on the Reserve Bank’s website might be used. The event is also an opportunity for teachers to engage in professional discussions with their peers and practicing economists, including the Bank’s ambassadors.
The one-day professional learning event is limited to 60 teachers. For teachers unable to attend, the event will be recorded and made available on the Bank’s website.
To support teachers from across Australia, a limited number of rooms have been reserved for attendees from interstate and regional New South Wales to stay at the Bank’s H.C. Coombs Centre. Please express your interest in staying at the Centre when registering for the event (a small fee applies).
Teachers can register from Friday 23 March 2018.

Business Educators Australasia 2018 Biennial Conference
The 2018 Business Educators Australasia Biennial Conference will be held in Canberra from Wednesday 3 October to Friday 5 October 2018 and is for Accounting, Business, Economics, Legal, and Civics and Citizenship educators.

Below is information about the Business Educators Australasia 2018 Biennial Conference for accounting, business,economics and legal educators.
We invite teachers of accounting, business, economics and legal education to join us at the 2018 Business Educators Australasia Conference ‘The Capital Connection: a journey of discovery’ from 3-5 October 2018 in Canberra.

Parliamentary Education Office in Canberra to visit Sydney in 2018
Andrew Back (Parliamentary Educator from Parliament of Australia in Canberra) has written to EBE NSW about the Parliamentary Education Office visiting Sydney in 2018. There are opportunities for incursions and teacher professional development sessions.

2019 NSW Premier’s Teacher Scholarships for Commerce, Economics or/and Business Studies teachers
Applications are invited from Commerce, Economics and/or Business Studies teachers in Government, Catholic or Independent Schools and TAFE NSW Institutes across New South Wales for two 2019 Premier’s Teacher Scholarships to undertake a five week study tour within Australia or overseas.
The two scholarships being offered to Commerce, Economics and/or Business Studies teachers are:
- Premier’s Reserve Bank of Australia Economics Scholarship
($15,000) - Premier’s First State Super Financial Literacy Scholarship
($15,000)
