2017 EBE NSW Annual Conference - 'New Frontiers: Economics & Business Education in an Era of Innovation'

Economics and Business Educators NSW invites you to the 2017 EBE NSW Annual Conference at our new venue this year, the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, at the University of Technology Sydney in central Sydney.
For many years now, this annual event has been the premier conference for teachers of Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce in NSW and from Australian International Schools overseas. The conference provides a unique opportunity for teachers in our subject areas to gather as a community to strengthen professional knowledge, skills and practice.
Our theme this year is “New Frontiers: Economics and Business Education in an Era of Innovation” with our first keynote speaker, Mr James O’Loghlin, speaking on the topic,“Innovation: The key to Australia’s future success”. The conference program for 2017 provides a variety of workshop opportunities on topics including HSC examination feedback and technique, effective teaching strategies for Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce, and content areas such as current economic conditions in the Australian economy and human resources management. There will be a two-part workshop focusing on the management skills of Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) Heads of Department in relation to developing an effective faculty.
The conference will provide teachers with valuable networking opportunities with other teachers beyond their own school. There will also be a range of exhibitors at the conference providing conference delegates with an opportunity to obtain information about the latest teaching and learning resources available for Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce.
EBE NSW is offering two professional learning grants for rural EBE NSW members and we encourage our rural members to apply for these grants.
The 2017 EBE NSW Annual Conference will provide a diverse range of professional learning opportunities for all participants. We look forward to welcoming you to our conference in Sydney on 21 July 2017.

2017 VCTA Comview Conference
Comview is the annual conference of the Victorian Commercial Teachers Association (VCTA). The program includes presentations and workshops to update business teachers’ knowledge of their subject disciplines, provides classroom strategies and activities to assist in improving student outcomes, and facilitates forums for discussion and debate in business education. The 2017 Victorian Commercial Teachers Association Comview Conference will be held on 27 and 28 November 2017 at Victoria University (300 Flinders Street, Melbourne).
EBE NSW members are able to pay the “BEA affiliate member (interstate)” conference fee.

EBE NSW Professional Development Event – Teaching the HSC Course (Year 12) in Business Studies for the First Time?

This NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority) endorsed course has been designed for beginning teachers and experienced teachers who are teaching the Year 12 HSC Business Studies course for the first time in Term 4 2017/2018. It will also be beneficial for teachers who have already taught this course in the past but are in need of a refresher course or, teachers who intend to teach this course in the near future.
This course will look at effective teaching and learning strategies designed to engage students, based on the current NESA HSC Business Studies syllabus. It will also cover programming ideas, assessment procedures and techniques. Useful teaching and learning resources will be available for each participant.

This course has been designed for beginning teachers and experienced teachers who are teaching the Year 12 HSC Economics or Legal Studies course for the first time in Term 4 2017/2018. It will also be beneficial for teachers who have already taught this course in the past but are in need of a refresher course or, teachers who intend to teach this course in the near future.
Each subject session will look at effective teaching and learning strategies designed to motivate and engage students, based on the current NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) syllabus. Assessment procedures and techniques (including the NESA external examination and how the examination is marked) and useful teaching and learning resources will also be looked at. The course will be presented by experienced teachers who will share their own experiences during their challenging early years of teaching and how they coped.

EBE NSW Professional Development Event – Field Trip – Law Day Out for Legal Studies and Commerce Teachers
Date: Friday 25 August 2017
Time: 8.45am – 3.10pm
Venue: Sydney Central Business District Courts (Local, District and Supreme) and The Salvation Army SCH Function Centre

Australian law lives in the courts where legislation is interpreted on a daily basis. Legal Studies and Commerce teachers require a deep understanding of how courts work and how they affect the lives of offenders, victims and people in society, as well as strategies to incorporate what happens in the courts into their lessons.
Economics and Business Educators NSW, in association with the Rule of Law Institute of Australia (www.ruleoflaw.org.au), is conducting a field trip for teachers based on experiential learning specifically designed for teachers of the NSW Education and Standards Authority (NESA) Legal Studies and Commerce syllabuses. The course will be facilitated by Jackie Charles, Education Coordinator, at Rule of Law Institute of Australia. Participants will:
- deepen their understanding of the subject matter in the NESA Legal Studies and Commerce (“Law in Society” and “Law in Action” topics) syllabuses and teaching and learning strategies
- learn from key legal personnel who will address teachers and answer questions
- visit courts (Local, District and Supreme) and observe court cases, engaging in professional discussions about the cases
- access a range of legal resources and learn how to use these with their students
- network with other Legal Studies and Commerce teachers.

The theme for the 2017 EBE NSW Annual Conference is “New Frontiers: Economics and Business Education in an Era of Innovation”. The keynote speakers are innovation consultant James O’Loghlin and entrepreneur Nahji Chu. They will expand our knowledge, inspire and equip us so that we are at the frontier of Economics and Business Education in the twenty-first century.

Twenty two workshop sessions linked to key syllabus areas in Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce are available to choose from, including:
- highly regarded university academics from the disciplines of Economics, Human Resources, Accounting, and Entrepreneurial Studies;
- 2016 HSC Examination review sessions for Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies;
- experienced teachers sharing best practice in relation to areas such as formative assessment, use of technology, and developing deep, authentic learning experiences; and
- a leadership strand on how to develop an effective faculty as a Head of HSIE Department.
The 2017 EBE NSW Annual Conference will provide plenty of opportunities to network with colleagues, as well as opportunities to collect teaching resources to take straight back to school and use in the classroom.
The location of the conference, at the University of Technology Sydney, is in the heart of the city and only a short walk from Central Station.

Economics and Business Educators NSW is pleased to announce that it will be hosting its Annual Conference on Friday 21 July 2017 at a new, larger venue: the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, Business School of the University of Technology, Sydney.
The theme this year is New Frontiers: Economics and Business Education in an era of innovation.
After last year’s sell-out conference, add the date to your calendar to make sure you do not miss this opportunity. There will be keynote speakers, an expanded offering of over twenty workshops to choose from, exhibitor displays, resources and networking opportunities.

Reserve Bank’s Teacher Immersion Series For Economics Teachers
The Reserve Bank will host the first event in its new Teacher Immersion series. The event is an opportunity for secondary school Economics teachers to learn directly from experts about the Reserve Bank’s roles and functions, receive an economic update and be taken through topics that teachers have most commonly asked questions about. Teachers will also be exposed to current Bank research that is aligned to curricula.

EBE NSW Professional Development Event – 2017 EBE NSW Economics Update Conference

EBE NSW is excited to be running its annual Economics Update Conference on Friday 26 May 2017. Sponsored by CPA Australia, this course will provide Economics teachers with up to date information and statistics, to complement the Preliminary and HSC Economics syllabuses. Each session has been specifically linked to syllabus content.
A high calibre of experts will be presenting from a range of organisations, including: Fair Work Commission, Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, Reserve Bank of Australia, University of Sydney Business School, The Sydney Morning Herald and CPA Australia.
At the end of each session, course participants will have the opportunity to engage in a question and answer session with the presenter, to answer specific questions.
This event will be hosted at CPA Australia’s Sydney office in Harrington St, Sydney (5 minute walk from Circular Quay Railway Station).

EBE NSW Professional Development Event – Revamping and Resourcing Commerce

Does your Commerce program need revamping in order to engage more of your students in the 21st century classroom? Do you need activity based resources which will save you time and inspire your students? Then come along to “Revamping and Resourcing Commerce”. Participants will gain fresh insights into the Commerce syllabus and will be able to reflect on and improve their Commerce teaching strategies. Presenters will focus on authentic and innovative programming and assessment. The course will provide participants with opportunities for collegial discussions and the sharing of ideas and resources.
Participants are asked to email a Commerce learning task or assessment task with marking criteria to admin@ebe.nsw.edu.au by 21 March 2017. These resources will be collated and distributed to each participant.
