2016 Business Educators Australasia Biennial Conference – “Thinking, Teaching, Doing Business"

The 2016 Business Educators Australasia national conference will be held in Hobart, Tasmania on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 September 2016. The conference will provide a forum for the teaching and learning of business and economics education and associated studies for colleagues across Australia. A particular emphasis will be on the development of the Australian Curriculum. As EBE NSW is an affiliate member of Business Educators Australasia, EBE NSW members can attend the conference at a discounted rate. There are also low student teacher rates available.
 
Currently the Conference Planning Committee is calling for expressions of interest for papers and workshops. More details can be found on the home page of the Business Educators Australasia website at www.bea.asn.au which will take you to the conference website.
 
EBE NSW is offering one of its members a professional development grant to attend the 2016 Business Educators Australasia Biennial Conference. The grant will pay for all flights, accommodation at the conference venue (Wrest Point Hotel) and the conference registration fees. More details will be available soon.

EBE NSW Professional Development  Event – Teaching the Preliminary course (Year 11) in Business Studies for the first time?

Date:  Friday 27 February 2015
Time: 8.45am – 3.30pm 
Venue: Department of Education and Communities NSW Building, 3B Smalls Road, Ryde

This course has been designed for beginning teachers and experienced teachers who are teaching the Year 11 Preliminary Business Studies course for the first time in 2015. It will also be beneficial for teachers who may have already taught this course in the past but who need a refresher course, or teachers who intend to teach this course in the near future. This course will look at effective teaching and learning strategies designed to engage students, based on the current NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards syllabus. It will also cover programming ideas and assessment procedures and techniques. Useful teaching and learning resources will be available for each participant. This course will be presented by experienced teachers who will share their own experiences of teaching during the challenging early years.

EBE NSW Professional Development Event – Revamping and Resourcing Commerce

Date: Wednesday 1 April  2015
Time:  4.15pm – 7.30pm
Venue: Department of Education & Communities NSW Building – 3B Smalls Road, RYDE

Does your Commerce program need revamping in order to engage more of your students in the 21st century classroom? Do you need activity based resources which will save you time and inspire your students? Then come along to “Revamping and Resourcing Commerce”.  Participants will gain fresh insights into the Commerce syllabus and will be able to reflect on and improve their Commerce teaching strategies. Presenters will focus on authentic, innovative programming and assessment. The course will provide participants with opportunities for collegial discussions and the sharing of ideas and resources.

Economics and Business Educators NSW 2015 Annual Conference

The 2015 EBE NSW Annual Conference will be held on Friday 15 May 2015 from 8.45am – 4.00pm at Club Burwood RSL (96 Shaftesbury Road Burwood). This is the highlight event in NSW for teachers of Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce.

EBE NSW 2015 Annual Conference Professional Development Travel Grants

Are you a teacher from a rural area of NSW and a financial member of EBE NSW? EBE NSW is funding the full conference registration fee and a contribution to travel expenses (up to $500) for two teachers from a remote area of NSW. Teachers who wish to apply are asked to email EBE NSW a statement of 500 words or less outlining the expected benefits and learnings to be gained by attending the conference and networking with other teachers, and how those learnings would be shared with teachers from your school/region.

Applications should be emailed to admin@ebe.nsw.edu.au no later than 4 May 2015. Applicants should include their name, school, address, email address, BOSTES number (if applicable) and EBE membership number. All applicants should ensure that they have their principal’s permission to attend the conference.

Economics and Business Educators NSW , in association with S P Jain School of Global Management, is offering Business Studies teachers an aopportunity to explore simulation as  a teaching method in Business Studies.  A typical business makes hundreds of decisions on a daily basis. The teaching method of simulation can give students  the skills and experience they need to make the right decisions. The Harvard Leadership Simulation focuses on how teams make complex decisions when critical information is distributed unevenly among members and when members have partially conflicting goals. Sophisticated computer software simulates the real world and enables participants to practice in a safe environment and learn from the mistakes made.

  • teachers who intend to teach one of these courses in the near future.

Each subject session will look at :

  • effective teaching and learning strategies designed to motivate and engage students, based on the current BOSTES NSW syllabus.
  • assessment procedures and techniques, including the BOSTES NSW HSC external examination and how the examination is marked.
  • useful teaching and learning resources.

The course will be presented by experienced teachers who will share their own experiences during their challenging early years of teaching and how they coped.

EBE NSW Professional Development Event – Current Economic Events and Monetary Policy

Date: Tuesday 1 September 2015
Time: 4.25pm – 6.00pm
Venue: The Reserve Bank of Australia, 65 Martin Place Sydney NSW 2000

This information evening will be presented by Merylin Coombs, Deputy Head of Economic Analysis Department from The Reserve Bank of Australia. During this professional development event Economics teachers will be able to gain an update on current economic events and increase their understanding of monetary policy at the bank that conducts monetary policy, The Reserve Bank of Australia. Teachers will also be able to ask questions during the Q&A session. This will be an excellent opportunity to gain valuable, up to date information to share with your HSC Economics students as they approach the 2015 BOSTES HSC Examination.

EBE NSW Professional Development  Event – Field Trip to CHOICE Lab and Testing Facility 

Date: Wednesday 23 September 2015 (First week of the end of Term 3 school holidays)
Time: 10.30am – 1.00pm

Would you like a guided tour of the CHOICE Lab and Testing Facility to deepen your understanding of the subject matter in the Legal Studies, Business Studies and/or Commerce syllabuses? CHOICE, the public face of the Australian Consumers’ Association, is used in classrooms across NSW as a teaching and learning resource by teachers of Business Studies, Legal Studies and Commerce. During this experiential professional development course, participants will increase their understanding of how CHOICE protects consumers as a non-legal mechanism and how CHOICE tests hundreds of products each year.

The course will begin with light morning tea giving participants an opportunity to network with each other and CHOICE staff. There will be a presentation about the past and present projects of the CHOICE organisation, and an opportunity to ask questions. Participants will then be able to view the testing labs in action and dialogue with the CHOICE testers. Participants will also be able to gain information about the possibility of organizing a field trip for their students to CHOICE in the future.

Limited to 20 attendees.
